A few days ago, Where Monsters Dwell conducted an interview with the comic writer extraordanaire, Gail Simone. Where Monster's Dwell does a fantastic webcast that I can't help but tune in every single week and listen to these two broadcasters talk about everything geekified within all of nerditude. But what was different this time was I decided to call in and ask Gail a few questions. I was so freaking nervous I had trouble getting that first question out. But it was super fun to actually get to chat with Gail none-the-less.

If you haven't had a chance to here Jimmy Palmiotti's super awesome podcast, tune into Where Monsters Dwell every Wednesday evening and enjoy the fun.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Issue #21 of Power Girl begins the resolution of the Maxwell Lord Mystery and why he’s wiping the memories of every hero except for the J.L.I. Power Girl flies off after a brutal fight with her former teammates to jog the memories of her friends in hopes of bringing the fight Maxwell Lord. But if Power Girl can’t even convince the greatest detective of all time, Batman, what chance does she have with anyone else?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">One of the most appealingly funny attributes of Power Girl is how much bigger she is than most males in the DCU. She still has than fantastic sex appeal that every artist that’s ever sketched Power Girl out hopes for, but she’s definitely given a stature that towers over most men. (Face up to it guys, we all fantasize about girl’s who are tougher, taller and stronger than we are.) I understand the reason for it as Superman himself is above average when it comes to size, but that didn’t keep me from laughing hysterically as Power Girl looks down at Batman during their conversation.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Judd Winick really is doing a great job with Brightest Day within Power Girl, but I was a little jolted with two Batmen standing side by side…and there’s more to come! Just like with Superman #708 and the Superman Squad of the future, I have a sneaking suspicion the same thing is going to happen with Batman; we’ll never know when we’re looking at Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, or whoever else ends up wearing the cape and cowl. I’ll say it again…Damn you Grant Morrison!

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The story itself is actually quite good despite the reminder of the Batman atrocity. Being someone who enjoys nostalgic storylines, getting to see Ted Kord wear the blue suit again was icing on the cake. The emotional impact of the book is effectively portrayed through Power Girl’s constant scolding of herself for not staying with Blue Beetle the day he was killed. As often as Ted keeps returning in flashbacks since Blackest Night began, I’ve been wondering to this day if they plan on bringing him back from the dead. What a nice change it would be for DC to divert from their typical storytelling technique and leave Kord dead. Here’s to hoping!

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I know Basri has been getting a lot of criticism for his artistic style, but I think his combination of anime and contemporary American comic book art has worked quite well for this title. Jessica Kholinne’s mastery of appropriate colors has been a major contributor to Basri’s excellence as well.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">
I have no idea who the artist is, but this might have become my new favorite Wonder Woman sketch of all time. This is, no doubt, only a portion of the entire Wonder Woman family. It's such an amazing sketch and I might attempt recreating it. I told myself I would stop drawing Wonder Woman due to the fact that I've done almost 25 Wonder Woman sketches in the past, but this might be too good to pass up. Enjoy!

And if anyone knows the artists name, let me know so I can credit him or her. Thanks!
We've all thought about the fact that if certain characters from our favorite medium were actually alive, we would do everything we could to become their friend and staying on their good side. Well, for me, that list of characters comes down to a top ten list. Hence the name of this posting. Comment below if you agree or disagree with some of the names here, or add any character you think SHOULD HAVE made the list. Enjoy!
Magneto

Being discriminated against can surely put someone through one hell of a mind-fuck. And every once in a while someone comes from the ashes of that group to rise against his discriminators. If Malcolm X taught us one thing, it's the fact that after a while...oppressors will get their just desserts. Magneto is no exception. He takes his vengeance to new heights never before seen by humankind. He's not truly a bad guy, just someone very, VERY pissed off at the rest of the world for how he was treated growing up. When a person has the ability to move bridges (or anything magnetic) I'd recommend steering clear of him.

Spock
Yes, the unknowingly cocky alien son of a bitch who seems to have a handle on everything knowledgeable. Sure, he's had his minor bumps down the road, but he's not someone I would want to get on my bad side. When he sets out to accomplish something, he is a juggernaut of unstoppable will and determination. He's almost like a walking encyclopedia of knowledge that can prove useful in any situation. With his nearly flawless ability to calculate impossible equations, he's quite possibly the next closest thing to a "Batman in Space." it's those smart aliens you've got to watch out for, otherwise you might just find yourself in a Vulcan mind-meld of pain.
Veronica Mars
If you haven't seen her show, then get on Netflix right now and start watching how awesome Veronica is at nailing the bad guys to the wall! If you're her friend, then you have an automatic safety net all jam-packed in one person. Verging on being one of the smartest women on planet Earth, she has brought down some of the richest and most powerful people in her local community an some national icons. But if you double-cross her, or piss her off, she will go to any lengths to bring you down and expose you for the creep you really are. Sometimes I feel as if Veronica is watching me on a daily basis, just waiting for me to do something wrong and put me in jail for the rest of my life. As innocent as she may look, she will destroy anyone who deserves it.
Bugs Bunny
Come on, you can't leave the coolest, calmest, and the most sarcastic rabbit in the history of cartoons off this list. If you leave him alone, he'll leave you alone. But if decide it's time for "wabbit season" you might discover yourself running into a brick wall painted like a tunnel, or in a pot of boiling water surrounded by "ingins," or in a barbers chair getting an incredibly close shave while synchronizing your pain to the beat of Beethoven's 5th. Every once in a while Bugs might run into a character that gets the better of him, but you can't allow that to invalidate everything else he's done to every other character he's come in contact with. Daffy might be clever and diabolical, but he doesn't hold a candle to the furry tailed bunny of terror.
Rorschach

Rorschach is a nut case, I think we can all agree to that. But being a nut case doesn't necessarily mean anything. Rorschach however takes things very personally and will make you squeal if you upset him. He's dropped someone down an elevator shaft, broken gang member's fingers, killed a crime boss, and thrown boiling hot grease onto another man's face...this is not a stable human being! Not only that, but his detective skills are uncanny. Sure, Batman could give Rorschach a run for his money, but he's definitely no one dumby. He will find anyone who has wronged him or someone else and shove you into a refrigerator or use some type of torture until you give him what he wants. Recommendation...don't become a criminal.

Lois reminds me of my own mother in that she doesn't put up with anyone's crap! If you make her mad, might as well just give up the ghost because she won't allow you room to breath. Bill Cosby once described what a conniption would look like. Make sure you youtube Bill Cosby to find out this description because it will help in seeing why I picked Lois for this list. John Locke
He that represents the dead philosopher whose philosophies on life have been defined as the grail of Illuminati characterize Lost's John Locke perfectly. Locke seemed to have a monopoly on life once landing on that island. Everyone else seemed to just run into more trouble and were incredibly fickle; they trusted each other, then didn't trust each other, than made full circle again in trusting each other while not trusting the ones they trusted before...and the circle continues to revolve around this mentality. Except for John Locke who always seemed to trust certain people but never excluded anyone else. As crazy as he may have sounded, I'd rather have John Locke on my side if I were stranded on a strange island filled with all sorts of dangers and what not.

3. Lex Luthor
Simply looking at Luthor freaks me out! Luthor is best type of megalomaniac, going after every bit of land he can get his hands on and ever superhero he can destroy...namely Superman. Over the years, his obsession to kill the Man of Steel has gone from bad to worse, now utilizing every method of destruction he can muster to make sure that the name of "Luthor" is above every other name. He's proven he cares for no one but himself by way of killing his father, destroying corporation and corporation (failing at bringing Wayne Enterprises down) and leaving nothing but bruises and blood in his path. This is truly a man with no fear and uses every ounce of his energy to keep himself on top.

Darth Vader
So forget about that annoying kid from episodes 1,2, and 3, let's take a look at the Sith master himself we've all known for years, Darth Vader. Sure, he was under the influence of an even more manipulative dark lord, but as we learn from Episode six, he how he drop kicked that S.O.B. in the very end. Vader is without a doubt tough MoFo. If you upset him, you get one hell of a choke hold that you won't wake up from. He survived the worst case of second degree burns in the history of mankind and still kept on ticking and swinging his light saber. Vador is a survivor...one I wouldn't want on my bad side.
Batman

Recently, the question that's been running around the internet is this...Who would win in a fight, Chuck Norris or Batman? You know what the popular answer has become? You guessed it, Batman!

I'm sorry, but when a character has been deemed better than Chuck Norris, you KNOW that it has to be true! DC Comics has been taking advantage of this character by way of using him as the poster child for comics. You may see Spider-Man outside of every comic book store, but Batman appeals to everyone young and old.

But getting away from the Norris vs. Batman question, the Dark Knight has shown us for the last 75 years that his intellect, athleticism, and his unmatched detective skills are a force to be recognized and worshiped.

One of the most appealing aspects of Batman is his dark personality. He doesn't have favorites, he's not fooled easily, and he waves the thought of death in front of his enemies like it's an old toy ready to be trashed. He has no fear and will stop at nothing to avenge those who have been wronged.

The fact that he has fought intergalactic and supernatural battles, time traveled, defied death, destroyed some of the most powerful beings in the universe with no super power at all kind of defines his kick-ass persona. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Superman, Wonder Woman, or the X-Men, but you have to admit that Bob Kane did one hell of a job in creating this caped crusader. Don't get on his bad side folks, he will most definitely make you pay.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Meanwhile, there’s a volcano that’s erupted and will most definitely kill all of them if they don’t quit fighting each other.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I’m not a follower of the Doom Patrol. Not because I didn’t have an interest in it, it’s just my wallet told me not to. But with all of the great things I’ve heard about it, I had no fear of picking up #19 as it continued the story left off in Secret Six #30. What I did expect to happen was the ridiculous and hilarious banter between the two teams, but what I wasn’t expecting was how bland and unclimactic this issue felt to me. Thus lies the problem with crossover storylines! If someone isn’t reading a title, and you compel that reader to buy that title due to its connectivity with another, you risk losing that reader due to lack of investment. I’m not invested in Doom Patrol, therefore I’m probably not going to enjoy it that much picking up at issue #19.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Keith Giffen shouldn’t be faulted however; his writing is clever and pristine, obviously showing how much time and effort he puts into this title and the characters within. Last month Gail Simone did wonders with implementing the Doom Patrol into Secret Six #30, giving every character (from both teams) a turn in the spotlight. Likewise, Giffen brings out the best of the Six and the Doom patrol in a barrage of heated battles that will make you chuckle with delight. But whatever happened to Jeanette? She seems to hide away in the corner somewhere and by the book’s end, hasn’t a clue of what’s going on. Definitely not the Jeanette I know. In and of itself, this issue is well written but definitely a Doom Patrol book. Giffen doesn’t stutter in this aspect in the least, which as stated above, makes it difficult for readers not familiar with the title to become invested in it.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">As much as I wanted to enjoy the art, I had trouble getting into it. My issue was how a number of characters were visually interpreted in many different ways. Luckily each character has his or her own costume to help me tell who’s who. But the artist toggle (you knew it was coming) really bugged me as consistency was virtually non-existent with every turn of the page. Both artists, Randall and Thibert, are incredibly talented, but mix them together on one book and all Hell breaks loose. Keep it simple DC…keep it simple.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Huh?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">That’s basically what I asked myself with almost every page turn of issue #20. Not only is there a confusing twist at the end, but everything in this issue makes me do a double-turn; mostly because this White Lantern and his moralistic ramblings just aren’t making any sense. This, in turn, causes me to think that Brightest Day is one of the more contrived miniseries I’ve ever read from DC.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">To start off, was the purpose of Aquawar purely to help Aquaman get the truth from Mera? Is that all? The White Lantern really thought that putting everyone’s lives in danger only to help Arthur discover the truth was the best course of action? Yeah, it worked – the two lovers got back together in a loving embrace, very romantic I must say. But how does this event do any good when the White Lantern kills Aquaman off at the very last moment, only causing more pain and anguish for Mera? If it was Aquaman who needed to learn something, why create this whole scene when the purpose was to have him die immediately after? With only four issues to go, Johns and Tomasi had better make some sense of killing everyone off after they’ve completed these “tasks” the White Lantern has secretly given them. Right now, I feel like I’m reading a series by Grant Morrison.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The White Lantern seems like it’s on crack, or high on meth doesn’t it? It tells Boston Brand to eat hamburgers, open up the Bermuda Triangle where all Hell breaks loose, and seems to be stringing everyone along on this wild goose chase. I’m all about waiting for a mystery to make sense, but good grief, how much plot twisting chaos can a person put into a story until it becomes a pile of incoherent jargon?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Now, let’s focus in on the most interesting part of issue #9, the meeting between Hamlet and Shakespeare…or the one we THINK to be Shakespeare. I’m not completely convinced that this drunkard with a death wish is in fact the infamous writer; he seems to be a little too seedy to be the one everyone in this Shakespearean world worships and follows; he never actually reveals his identity verbally now does he?

In fact, to this day, I don't consider him a superhero because...well...he's a God from Norse Mythology. This was Marvel's attempt to create a comic book series to counter the popularity of DC's Superman and Batman, even though they had Spider-Man and the X-Men which was, in some ways, doing better than DC's two caped crusaders. Why Marvel felt this was a GOOD move I don't know, but I don't think I'll ever understand it.

HOWEVER!!! With that being said, after watching this new trailer, I'm not sure I have enough napkins to sop up all the saliva that's pooling on the floor. Of course this film is going to be predictable and filled with annoyingly modern twists, but Marvel Studios seems to have taken great care in giving this film the type of quality it needs.

But even better is the fact that Kenneth Branagh is directing, Anthony Hopkins makes a cameo, and Natalie Portman returns after her fantastic performance in Black Swan. Chris Hemsworth seems to be a good choice for the Mighty Thor as well.

Now, the bigger question is...How can I convince my wife to come watch it with me? This could be another cinematic excursion I take by myself. (but It's always more fun to bring Clarissa along because I enjoy laughing at the previews for bad movies before hand. Oh well.) Enjoy!

Er.....well....wait a second, that's not entirely true is it? I do recall seeing this lovely actress in a few other shows involving supernatural activity, such as an Aquaman "made for TV" movie, the hit show Supernatural, and one episode of Smallville back in the day. I guess she IS fully equipped to take on this role of Wonder Woman. She's at least got some Robot Chicken voice over experience under her belt, thats got to count for something!

One thing I do hope that Adrianne can pull off is the maturity that comes along with Wonder Woman's character. I'm aware of her acting abilities and couldn't have chosen a better actress to play the Amazon Princess, short of Lucy Lawless, but I wonder about her voice. Sure, the series is going to start form the beginning, so Dianna will be a young woman, but there's still got to be some maturity within her voice if this is going to work.

I'm not real concerned with the script as of now. Everyone has their opinions, but for me personally, I try not to judge a scripts plot until after I see it executed. As long as the writers are competent, I will be perfectly happy with whatever they deliver. It sounds as if the TV show is going to have the focus of the 1975, Lynda Carter TV show where her relationship with the handsome pilot, Steve Trevor, comes into play more often than not, but will also have that modern twist. I can only hope that "twist" involves some supernatural monster fights!!!

Heretichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03319518271750696058jamesqtrapp@hotmail.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1557105252342608466.post-75287113875218463272011-02-15T09:15:00.000-06:002011-02-15T09:15:18.021-06:002011-02-15T09:15:18.021-06:00Superman's Hatred For Automobiles Has got To Stop!

So what do you think, does the Superman family just have a hatred for gas guzzling, air polluting vehicles...or is it something else?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">It’s one of those stories I like the most from my comics, when the writer takes time to develop the unmasked persona of a hero. Barry Allen is bombarded with work and isn’t receiving a lot of support from his fellow policemen. This in turn is having a major impact on his family and social life having missed the first Allen family picnic since they began who knows when. But of course, this side of the story helps to initiate the angst and drama as Barry does his best to solve the mystery of the 16 year old Elongated Kid who somehow died of old age in less than a day. But to top it all off, this Flash installment ends with Barry Allen chasing after Barry Allen…wait, what?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So this issue is pretty compact with practically three plotlines running through it; Barry having issues with his family, the Elongated Kid mystery, and the motorcyclist randomly speeding through the city who happens to be Barry Allen’s doppelganger. I realize that this is the beginning of Flashpoint and Johns is just using The Flash to help move into the miniseries, but I did feel just a tad overwhelmed…mostly because I wasn’t expecting it.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I loved the focus on Barry’s family troubles due to his job and how he’s having difficulty coping with everything else surrounding his life, especially the tension that he and his wife are struggling through. One thing is clear though despite all the tension, those two really do love each other, which is an encouraging thought. I certainly wouldn’t want to see Iris leaving Barry after he’s been back from the dead for such a short time.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Let’s move to the crime scene with the purposefully confusing and wrinkly Elongated Kid because this is where I have minor difficulties. It’s the perfect way to start a mystery; creating an event that seemingly has nothing to do with the major events in the story. But connected to the family issues and the other Barry Allen, my imagination felt a little too congested. BUT!!! This is in no way stopping me from going to pick up flashpoint and continuing with the regular Flash title. I guess, despite the overwhelming nature of this issue, Johns is doing a good job at keeping me hooked.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Having recently voted Manapul as the best artist of 2010, I’m certain to say his nomination for 2011 is looking exceptionally bright. But even more impressive is Brian Buccellatto’s usage of lighting, both bright and dim. The crime scene flushed with shades of green and the bright orange light bouncing off of the motorcycle as it glides down the side of the building, illuminating off of Barry and his office is a definite sign of pure and error free artistry.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">And just a side note…sure, it’s a surprising ending, but if anyone is really THAT surprised by Barry Allen traveling from the future to meet his past self, then you’re either really easily impressed or haven’t been around comics long enough to recognize this trend in comics.

<span style="color: lime; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My Majestically Climactic Conclusion

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I shouldn’t really complain should I? This is the nature of comics. They come out once a month and we only get 22 pages of storyline that only takes us anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to read through, I should expect some overwhelming stories right? This isn’t a bad issue by any means. It’s not the best of the series, but you won’t read it and think to yourself “What the fuck was that shit?” It’s still worth your time.

<span style="color: #66ff33; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">7 out of 10 stars.

Heretichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03319518271750696058jamesqtrapp@hotmail.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1557105252342608466.post-79441980461374220512011-02-11T17:12:00.000-06:002011-02-11T17:12:54.636-06:002011-02-11T17:12:54.636-06:00X-Men: First Class Film TrailerAnd now we come to the film which explains it all. X-Men first class brings us the story of friendship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lencher, Professor X and Magneto. But, as I'm sure we can all figure out, it's also the story of how their friendship was broken, torn by different values and ideals of how to live (or not live) amongst the humans that hated them.

There have been four X-Men films thus far, with X-Men: First Class becoming the fifth on June 3rd of this year. I'm fairly optimistic about this film as the majority of the X-Men movie franchise has been an overall success. (That stupid X3 film...what a waist.) What I find interesting is, based on the trailer, how the costume theme for First Class seems to represent that of the original X-Men from the Stan Lee days. I have no opinions about this, I just think it will be interesting to see how this pre-X-Men world is going to be played out on screen.

Agents is only four issues into its run and already it’s blowing me away. There’s a certain amount of that silver age mentality that flushes though this series which is probably why I like it so much, but there’s more to it than just that. The mystery around Spider and why these missions are important has plagued my brain ever since T.H.U.N.D.E.R. began. Each issue has focused on the individual members of the team and their story but nothing new has been revealed to help explain why. This, I’m sure, frustrates many readers nation-wide, but not me. I’ve been completely engrossed with this run’s premise and the uncertainty of everything it’s brought to the table…and #4 keeps the mystery pumping with even bigger and broader questions with no answer in sight. Hence the life of Sociologists.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Driven by the events of the past, Spider has attempted alterations in their designs and programing to help keep their prospect agents alive for as long as possible. I think this throws out the whole “dead in twelve months” concept allowing Spencer a lot more time to get this series on its feet and find new ways of keeping these characters around for a while. (You know it’s going to happen.) A “rough n’ tough” blondy by the name of Eric is approached by Toby and Coleen about becoming the new Dynamo, which follows a series of flashbacks and character development scenes to help establish what kind of person Eric is and how he might be used in the series. More or less, this is what #4 is about. Sound boring you say? Well, methinks you jumpeth the guneth.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Nick Spencer doesn’t provide a lot of new material in this issue. In fact, I would say there’s a lot of recapping going on about what these powers do to the agents over a period of time. Spencer goes into a little more detail about the advancements made in their technology and whatnot, but it’s nothing we haven’t already figured out. The quality of this issue, however, doesn’t lie with the already established plot, but rather the dialog that happens between characters.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I think it’s clear that Toby has been a mystery for most readers. What’s his purpose besides being a pansy little salesman? I’ve wondered this since issue #1, and now finally something is revealed that makes me wonder what the future holds for T.H.U.N.D.E.R. in the 21st century. The interaction he has with Eric and Coleen spit out some much needed clues about his intentions and what he can provide in the story. The ending took me by complete surprise, which makes me wonder if Toby is a bad guy or a good guy and if these missions have been true, life threatening missions, or mere training exercises to prepare them for the real thing. Either way, Toby has definitely been put into a much bigger spotlight within the series which could prove interesting.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">As most of you know, artist toggling is not a favorable aspect for me when it comes to comics. However, the way it was handled here I can accept…even if I don’t really like it. To help establish a trip down memory lane, different artists were called upon to recreate the world of comics from when I was still a baby. George Perez does a fantastic job with presenting the older style (of which he is quite familiar with) and brings it into this issue successfully. The transition into the more modern artistic realm of #4, executed quit well by Cafu (the artists formerly known as who?) and presents a great display of visuals as can be expected.

<span style="color: lime; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My Majestically Climactic Conclusion

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I actually don’t know what the general consensus is among fellow bloggers and readers about this series thus far. I do know that I am a HUGE fan and recommend this run to everyone. We’re only four issues in so it’s not too late to start from #1 and work your way up to now. If you aren’t a huge fan of dialog heavy comics, you might have trouble muscling it down, but I would recommend giving it a chance.

Should Hire This Guy!This might just be the most amazing Superman video ever...It's just way to short. If this short were turned into a regularly scheduled Saturday morning cartoon show, you can bet your ass I would be buying cable just to get that classic, vintage comic appeal. Enjoy!
So around 3:00 PM today I was driving down the packed, snowy roads only to realize that traffic was packed and not budging and inch. Luckily I was next to an exit which happened to lead to Noodles and Company and the "I Want More Comics" store. Needing a break from working anyway, I decided to pull off and let traffic get a little less congested and eat some food and walk around the comic book store for a few minutes. One of the things I noticed on the Graphic Novel and Trade Paperback shelf was the Bomb Queen series, and my brain began to think about the literary worthiness the queen meany had.

I read a few pages of the first volume and laughed my head off, it was amazing! I had always noticed this series on the shelves of every comic book store I've been too but threw it off as a mere sexual rouse that comic book nerds could get off too, so I never bothered picking it up. But after reading the first chapter in the volume one, I'm starting to reconsider following this series.

From what I can gather, Bomb Queen was originally apart of a foursome of female villains with "Queen" in their individual names. Their task was to eliminate all of the super heroes in New Port City, which they did, but afterwards the four women turned on each other fighting for rulership over the city. Bomb Queen came out victorious and has since then dubbed herself the dictator over the city. This obviously leads into numerous possibilities for heroes to come in and put an end to the Queen's dictatorious reign.

Super Villain series have become incredibly popular and I can only imagine that was one of the reasons Bomb Queen started in the first place. It's unique and different in comparison to the rest of comics currently being placed on the stands of comic book stores. Bomb Queen however, takes it a step further by keeping any censorship out of the picture and allowing both men and women to bear all.

If you were to pick up one issue of Bomb Queen, you would probably open up to pages filled with the queen's boobs on the verge of falling out of her virtually non-existent costume while catching glimpses of Queenies "special area." And it's not like the artists are trying to make this look like an accident, for Bomb Queen is written as someone who doesn't care about how exposed she is. In fact, she probably loves the fact that she is being portrayed to the world as a slut and nudist.

But due to the cities ban on super heroes, the city seems to have become a haven for villains everywhere. This in turn means more nudity and silly ways of showing off women's boobs and privates. The men get their time in the nudist spotlight as well, so don't think this is strictly and excuse for artists to draw naked women, although it's marketed that way.

When I read that first chapter though, I was amazed at how well written it was. This isn't just some mesh of raunchy humor; rather it's a clever comic which pokes fun at people's fear of nudity and sex in general. From what I read simply in that first chapter, Bomb Queen comes off as this brash female with more gusto and balls than your average testosterone driven American. The exposure of male and female bodies, along with how it ties in with the dialog is a direct commentary on how the nude figure is viewed in today's society, which would be very taboo. And while I'm not sure I could ever go home and tell my parents, "Hey! look at this! you should totally read this! It's awesome!" I still find myself very interested in this series and might very well become a fan of Bomb Queen.

But I want opinions. Are you reading Bomb Queen? If so, what are your thoughts? Is it worth reading or is it a waste of time? What are your thoughts about the whole premise of the series? Give me some feedback because I want to know if it would actually be worth my time to read.

In the meantime, here's a video trailer of Bomb Queen's Series. Bomb Queen was created and written by Jimmie Robinson and is published by Image Comics.
Amongst all the other cartoons with a "dark decor" that I watched growing up, like X-Men, Captain Planet, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, BTAS was the beginning of my journey into a much more mature and "adult" way of looking at comics.

Before Joe Lieberman came in and toned down the violent nature of kid's cartoon shows in the mid 90's, networks carrying animated TV series' targeted towards younger viewers began creating cartoons that fit the "young adult" label; delving into broader, more mature concepts and ideas that were typically saved for shows our parents watched after 9:00 PM. BTAS and X-Men is where it all started.

Even though X-Men rocked my world, I was always much more partial to the Dark Knight's time slot and made sure I was awake with my batwings on every Saturday. While many of the other shows relied on flashy effects and booms and explosions to keep the kid's attention, BTAS stayed much simpler and less complex visually. And to this day, the show remains a cult classic with Batman fans, old and young alike.

Why? Because it was fresh, new, and different from all the other shows. When Batman first hit comic book stands, the art was far from being worthy of of the title. Then Warner Bros. took something that was bad and turned into something artistic; giving it that "Film Noir" motif and keeping it classy, reminding us of the great detective comics like Dick Tracy and the Green Hornet. The most defining feature of Batman? That incredibly square chin that stuck out of that pointy-eared cowl like a sore thumb. And what did Dick Tracy's face look like back in the day? I'll let you do the math.

The show took major risks by tackling ideas that most parents probably wanted to keep their kids away from. Examples: Poison Ivy making plant-like copies of her husband because she never wanted her new found love to end, Robin dealing with the discovery of his parent's murderer, Batman confronting his father's legacy, and the list goes on. I was lucky enough to have a mother who relished the fact that I was thinking critically about comics and cartoons where all the rest of my friends were wondering what that thing dangling between their two legs was.

But let's look even further into that dark and well-written kid's shows and find out the work that went into each individual episode. The scripts took the show to incredible bounds, allowing for even more dark and twisted cartoon shows to emerge. But the most impressive aspect of the show was it's musical setting. How many of you knew that each episode had it's own specific theme song? I'm not talking about the Danny Elfman musical score that would start the show off weekly, I'm talking about after the fact, when the episode's title screen came up with it's painted still...THAT music was unique to it's specific episode. Great care was taken when it came to the music of the show, because that's where the heart of BTAS lay.

Of course we can't forget the amazing voice talents of Mark Hamil (The Joker), Kevin Conroy (Batman), Ron Perlman (Clayface), Helen Slater (Talia), John Glover (The Riddler), which helped boost the show's already awesome standard of quality. I wish I could spend as much time as I would like and praise this show's almost perfect execution in creating a new wave of kid's cartoon shows, (There's a disertation somewhere in this right?) but I can just simply ask you to get Netflix or buy one of the box sets and see it for yourself. In the meantime, check out this incredibly awesome Theme song opener, because I know we all love it!
Why do you ask? Well firstly because it will help you understand my review better. Secondly, it ties in with the comic. And thirdly...because it's just freaking awesome!!!

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">This trailer became a hot topic once it hit youtube and other like websites. No doubt it brought up the question of why DC isn’t making all of their animated films as good as this trailer. With the excitement and power that the trailer brought to the table, I guess this told the hierarchs at DC and WB to work their capitalization sorcery and get a miniseries going based off of the “highly anticipated game.” But, to be honest…the game itself I’m sure is awesome, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to work as a comic.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">This series is basically going to give us a more in depth back story that leads up to the video game plotline, picking up right at the point when Luthor stabs Superman in the back with his staff bearing a kryptonite tip on its end.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The whole world stands on the brink of destruction with Lex Luthor leading the way. Teamed-up with Brainiac, Lex is shocked to discover that Brainiac has betrayed him (big surprise) and plans to collect data from Earth before destroying it. (Another very predictable plotline rears its ugly head.) Luthor escapes and goes after the remaining heroes to help put a stop to Brainiac’s evil plot.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The problem with this series is contained in the story’s premise. With the trailer and game, we already know what’s going to occur and its inevitable outcome. What does DC think they can do with a story that’s already been figured out and publicized? In addition, how will this story affect the DC Universe as a whole? These are my preconceived notions of the series which, more or less, have played a part in dictating how I feel about this first issue. But I do think that most of DC’s loyal fans are going to be severely disappointed in this book purely based on the fact that nothing new is learned.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Wolfman and Bedard do give Luthor a proper treatment however; he’s still his old, egotistical, power hungry self who allows his hatred for Superman to take over any other emotions that might be lurking in the brain of his. I would say that in this issue, Luthor is a little more of a scaredy-cat than I would like, but not enough for me to hate the way he’s portrayed.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The four person team-up on the artsy side of things is a little more impressive than the literary side. The faults lie with the slightly disjointed and chaotic look of the characters. The lighting used for some of the highly active scenes, done very well by Strachan and Abbot, boost the visual appeal to a level that should not go unrecognized as outstanding.

<span style="color: lime; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My Majestically Climactic Conclusion<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">DC Universe Online Legends #1 is a prime example of why capitalizing on a good idea can fall flat on its face if not carefully done. Transformers is one of the few successes where capitalization worked flawlessly, starting from mere Japanese toys to blockbuster film projects. My opinion, this series should never made it past the drawing board.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">But who knows, maybe those who love the game will love this series just as much. But for you fans who are looking for that riveting storyline that should have come along with this title in the first place, I would say leave this title to build up dust on the racks at your local comic book store. If you are still interested in seeing what happens in the end, wait until your library has collected it in trade, find a spot to sit down, and get through it in an hour or so.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So the story picks up where we left off last month. A new character from the future, Psionic Lad, enters into Superboy’s time and life followed by a band of techno-cops ready to take the lad back into their custody. Superboy, always quick to act and not to think, saves the day and brings our brain-wave kid to safety. But, as is always with comics, we must always be wary of new people.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So first, let me say what I did like about this issue. The side story with the Hallow Men, which began back in issue #1, is beginning to build up enough momentum to keep me interested. And how Lemire has pulled Psionic Lad into the general framework of this story is a great way to keep continuity steady and strong; points to Lemire for that.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">What I don’t like is how awfully predictable this issue feels. When Psionic Lad made his appearance last month, my first thought was, “Oh man, he’s a bad guy!” Of course I thought a monkey wrench would be thrown into the story and I would be taken by surprise at PL’s purpose. Sadly, the final page confirmed I was right about who the bad guy is. I’m sure many of you are saying, “well just be patient Jimmy, maybe he’s not actually the bad guy.” Which, if this is true, would only mean that the heroes of the future wanted some aspect of their lives changed, and which could only occur through Superboy’s death; hence sending Psionic Lad to the future to complete the task. Very predictable and annoying if you ask me.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">But let’s address the high school drama motif permeating in this issue. I like a good romance just as much as the next guy, (Do most guys like romance?) but Lemire is making this series out as some after-school special. Superboy is too incredibly trusting and too much of a boy-scout for my tastes. I can only hope that next month provides more substance to counter this issue’s poor progression.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Pier Gallo might be put on my “most hated comic book artists of all time” list. The inconsistency in his artwork sends jolts up my spine. In some cases, Gallo puts together some incredibly impressive pieces, while the majority of the time characters feel exceptionally wooden and dull. But this isn’t helped by Jaime Grant’s poor coloring qualities as every page seems to have a blended look to it, making everything feel like it’s has a shade of yellow and tan.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The two most popular super villain teams come together in Secret #30, whose story will be concluded later this month in Doom Patrol #19. A lot is going on in this story as MacQuarrie’s grandson inherits a massive amount of cash, the entire rat-pack-like street gang, and a group of beautiful women who turn out to be more than just mere eye-candy. While all this is going on, the Six run head first into a duel with the Doom Patrol and go tooth and nail in an all-out death match. Put these two teams together in one book and what do you got? Well, you’ll need to purchase the book for that answer.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">To start off, I have to say that as much as I love Calafiore’s artwork, there are times when I can’t differentiate between characters. Bane’s “first date” scenario is a hoot, but when Spencer makes her entrance, at first glance I could have sworn it was Scandal all dolled up. Other than that, Calafiore brings his normal, top notch quality to the table leaving nothing back. And along with the incredible coloring job done by the Wright and Kalisz team-up, artistically this book is a joy.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">One of Gail Simone’s greatest literary qualities is her handle on the characters she’s writing. The Secret Six and the Doom Patrol are two of the craziest and zaniest teams in comics today, but Simone handles the interaction between these two groups perfectly. Amongst all of the punching, kicking, and chomping, the two teams were almost at a conversational friendly tone while they tried to kill each other. Simone hits this story hard and right on the mark, with the nicely added touch of Ambush Bug running around almost clueless to the goings-on.

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">And just when you thought MacQuarrie (You remember, that crippled and evil old man that pulled one hell of a mind-fuck on Catman a while ago.) was gone forever, Simone throws in that plot-twisting curveball and brings him back. Only this time, it’s through his grandson, who wastes no time in putting his crime racket together overnight, and looking good while doing it. I think this addition to the story will be most interesting especially if Catman figures out who this kid is. Let’s face it, Catman didn’t exactly come to terms with the loss of his son. He may just find this as a “Sins of the father” type of scenario and take his vengeance out on the boy. But we won’t know until Doom Patrol comes out right?

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Of course the problem with this “ULTIMATE CROSSOVER” is the confusion factor. I don’t actually follow Doom Patrol so I had no idea that Elasti-Woman was basically a human batch of play-doh, able to regenerate her own body parts. Why wasn’t she screaming in agony after losing her leg? I would have been continually perplexed until I decided to Wikipedia the hell out of Elasti-Woman. This is one of the major problems with crossovers…you have to give your readers some type of knowledge about the guest characters so they aren’t confused about certain things. But hey, it’s all well and good, it shouldn’t detract from your enjoyment.

<span style="color: lime; font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My Majestically Climactic Conclusion

<span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So now the debate begins; who would win in a fight? The Six or the Patrol? It’s all so zany and bonkers that it’s hard to really come to any definite conclusion. This issue will have you rolling on the floor with laughter and griping the edge of your chair in anticipation for what’s going to happen next. Pick up Doom Patrol #19 in two weeks!
