But now, news has hit the internet like a tornado with an attitude that Nickelodeon, the TV station most known for its re-runs of classic movies and kids cartoons shorts, has acquired full rights to the TMNT franchise. Nickelodeon has announced its plans to relaunch the Turtles as an animated cartoon show to hit TV’s everywhere by 2012.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shares a comedic sensibility with the Nickelodeon DNA, with added layers of action and fantasy that have kept this property an evergreen favorite with multiple generations of audiences," said Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.
In addition to the cartoon show relaunching, a live action/CGI film is also in the works which is promised to go back to the “roots” of Eastman and Lairds original idea for the Turtles. It will be much darker and more mature in content. Keep your eyes out for this!
This will certainly be interesting to see develop as hard-core TMNT fan’s expectations will rise to an astronomical level. Will this live-action film meet the dark tone of the 1st film back in 1990, or even the tone of the comic book prior to the film release? If so, how will audiences be affected? With this more mature way of attacking the Turtles concept, will parents be taken aback and fear their children’s fragile minds? What happens when the Turtles are no longer a “family-friendly” bit of entertainment? What happens when we, the original turtle’s generation of kids, embrace that which we love most and cry out for more “adult content” in our Ninja Turtle needs? Will it be as if Communism and anarchy have taken over the world once again? What will the world do once we, the original TMNT generation finally reclaim the thrown that was so unjustly taken by the generation of Power Ranger, Pokémon and Yugio fans?
