Movie Review - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

When it comes to making a pure action film, Michael Bay is one of the best. I didn't sit back thinking to myself, "when is this film going to be over?" at any point during the two and half hour long film. This could, quite frankly, be the greatest action film I have ever seen.

Plot: The battle for Earth has ended but the battle for the universe has just begun. After returning to Cybertron, Starscream assumes command of the Decepticons, and has decided to return to Earth with force. The Autobots believing that peace was possible finds out that Megatron's dead body has been stolen from the US Military by Skorpinox and revives him using his own spark. Now Megatron is back seeking revenge with Starscream and more Decepticon reinforcements on the way. In addition to Megatron rising from the dead, one of the oldest living Decepticons, named "The Fallen" is planning an to attack Earth and steal something of great value to the human race.

Optimus Prime, with his league of autobots, (some returning, some new) and a newly formed government military program has been formed to seek out and destroy and remaining Decepticon's lurking around on Earth. However, after two years of service, the government is unsure the Autobots and how effective they have been in ridding Earth of the Evil alien robots. In addition to this, Sam Witwicky discovers that the all spark wasn't all the Decepticons were after on Earth. And what discovers chills him to the bone.

My Thoughts: As conversations arise, and as I overhear people talking (as I eavesdrop) I've discovered one truth, movie watchers of today wish so much for a plot line that is realistic and believable, especially with Transformers. I've read many reviews and if I were to sum up these reviews in one sentence, it would go like this, "I enjoyed the movie, but the plot was non existent."

Now I don't know about you, but I went into this film knowing the plot would be way over the top and second rate. You have to expect that from a film like this! But the cool thing is, I prefer it that way! Why expect a plot that's as fantastic as the kind you find in films like Lord of the Rings, The Day the Earth Stood Still, or Watchmen when we know the movie concept for Transformers started from toys and grew into a kids Saturday morning cartoon show? The whole idea of alien robots from outer space is so outlandish, we should never hope for a script that is fathomable or comprehensible. It is suppose to be a fun film regardless of whether or not you think the plot makes sense.

Now on my end of things I thought the plot was decent, not great, but decent. But my favorite part of the film was the tremendously improved fight scenes. There were times I wasn't sure if the robots were real or animated. (Kudos to the animation quality.) It's like they studied how people in the real world duke it out, and brought that into the fights between the Autobots and Decepticons.

Two down sides of the film were the two autobots twins, and Megan Fox. The twins were funny at first, but one can only take so many racial slurs at a time. And Megan Fox is nice to look at, but her acting quality can be equated with the quality of Mr. Chef Boyardee's pasta.

Overall, the film was fantastic. However, for those of you hoping to be out of the theatre in an hour and a half, don't hold your breath. It's two and a half hour long duration (not including previews) will definitely have your knees a bopping and wrist watches (or your cell phone clocks) screaming at you "it's time to go, why haven't you left yet!? But for you die hard fans, (like me) the two and a half hours will feel incredibly inadequate and you'll sit there wanting more!

  1. Transformers vs Terminator... hows that for a plot. Robotic entities from an independant planet are more 'Human Friendly' than those evolved from a Human Planet. Transformers has balance in the decepticons vs autobot theme... but terminator has no friendlies.
Either way... those wishing a 'realist' movie should blame their mothers for not introducing aesops fables to them as children. Transformers could be seen as a metaphor for a dawning reality.
